Firefly Hike was a hit!

There is nothing better than enjoying fireflies on a hot summer night.

More than 50 people (22 adults and 33 kids) came out to Indian Lake County Park on July 9 to enjoy educational activities and a great hike to enjoy fireflies. Everyone gathered at 7 pm to learn about the animals and insects of the park. We had stations about mammals and bats, insects, skulls and bird watching. Everyone also made a s’more over the fire and had a chance to make a walking stick and pretend binoculars. Just prior to the hike, Ernie Stricker, aka, the bug guy, gave a short presentation about fireflies. He told us about the science of why fireflies light up and that fireflies are not tasty to birds. This was important as we had a group of girl scouts there who were earning a badge. Some kids got very competitive and caught up to 20 fireflies. All the fireflies were let go at the end of the night.

“Thank you for the invitation Get Kids Outside.

I so enjoyed my sons running free playing with other children and meeting with other families who also enjoy the outdoors.”
